Founded by George Clinton Shaw in Portland, New England, in 1860, Shaw's Supermarkets has continued to exist and thrive in the United States as the country's favorite and drug retailer. A few years later, in 1983, a 20% part of Shaw's stock and later in 1987, the controlling interest was acquired by J Sainsbury plc, today known as the Sainsbury's.One of the long-in-the-tooth American-founded supermarkets of the United States, Shaw's has stayed intense with the perpetual passage of time and has emerged as a progressive and growth-oriented organization. Shaw's Supermarkets, a subsidiary of the humongous Albertson family and is thus operating in about 150 stores across New England. Also, it was in the 2013 acquisition, Albertsons AB Acquisition LLC established their singular ownership upon leading US marts like Shaw's, Jewel-Osco, Acme, and Star Markets as part of the company's expansion mission in the food and drug retailing category. Currently, Shaw's is responsible for running over 157 stores, two distribution centers, an in-house transportation depot, and their store support center in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Rhode Island.
